Middle school students face charges in sexting scandal

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

A sexting scandal at a Fayette County middle school has led to a warning for parents whose kids have smartphones and tablets.

Investigators say a 13-year-old girl sent a nude photo of herself to her 14-year-old boyfriend. Both are students at Flat Rock Middle School. The incident came to the attention of law enforcement when the girl found out he had shown the photo to others.

Those students are now facing charges.

Investigators say parents should learn how to use their kids' electronic devices as well as their children know how.

Smartphones are capable now of taking, sharing and storing high resolution images. Possession of a single photograph of an unclothed child -- even by a child -- could lead to serious charges.

"According to Georgia law, possession of one of these images of a child in a state of nudity is possession of child pornography," said Joshua Shelton, an investigator with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. "The possession of one image is a felony."

Investigators said that parents need to be aware of the serious consequences of the sexting.
