Ex-LIRR worker convicted in copper theft scheme

Posted: Updated:

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- A former Long Island Rail Road signalman has been convicted of participating in a scheme to steal copper wire.

Michael Carsten faces up to a year in jail. He was convicted Friday of two counts of fifth-degree conspiracy.

A second defendant, Craig Borsetti, was acquitted on two conspiracy counts.

Nassau County prosecutors announced charges against 17 people last January. That includes 15 current or former LIRR employees.

Nine others have previously pleaded guilty to various charges, Newsday reported.

Prosecutors and LIRR officials say the group stole sold copper wiring from railroad facilities and then sold it. Authorities say they pocketed more than $250,000.

The LIRR employees were suspended without pay.

The LIRR is the nation's second-largest commuter railroad, serving 81 million riders a year.
