Tanger Outlets grand opening at National Harbor

Posted: Updated:

Shopaholics rejoice at the grand opening of Tanger Outlets at National Harbor in Prince George’s County. The 340,000-square-foot outdoor mall opens just in time for the holiday season.

People were already lined up and waiting before the doors opened at 9 a.m. on Friday. Tanger Outlet officials expect more than 75,000 people to flock there throughout the opening weekend to shop at the 85 brand name and designer stores like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

The mall is also expected to provide a financial boost to the county's economy. At the time it won approval, the developer estimated the additional tax revenue for the county would add up to about $12 million a year. It’s also a magnet for jobs. More than 7,000 people showed up at a job fair two months ago for one of the 900 jobs.

The mall will hold special events and stores will offer special discounts in celebration of the grand opening. County Executive Rushern Baker, the president of Tanger Factory Outlets and other community leaders will appear for the official ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Then they’ll cap off the opening day with a holiday fireworks show and musical spectacular at 7 p.m.

The big concern for people who live in the area is the traffic. The mall is right off the beltway on Oxon Hill Road. Prince George's County police plan to be out in force to help with traffic. Tanger Outlet officials say they have about 6,000 parking spots on site, and you can bet the lot will be full.
