Waterford parents raising awareness about heroin overdoses

(WJBK) -

The Waterford police chief says heroin overdoses are on the rise throughout southeast Michigan. Fox 2's Ron Savage reports the CEO of Medstar Ambulance, Kolby Miller, has reported an increase in 911 calls for those who have overdosed on the drug, and that the victims are becoming younger in age.

Med Star Ambulance responds to calls throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Lapeer counties.

One Waterford mother, Jeannie Richards, started a support group called "Bryan's Hope" after losing her son to a heroin overdose in 2012. She is working to raise awareness in the community.

"We do have a problem - admit it. Come out of the dark shadows and say 'Yes, my son died from a heroin overdose. No, I'm not proud of it,'" she tells Savage. Savage attended the group's first meeting Thursday night at the 300 Bowl on Cass Lake Road.

Richards started a group on Facebook to help spread the world: Heroin Epidemic in Waterford, Michigan.
