GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Gwinnett County school officials say a fight broke out between a teacher and a student on Wednesday.

According to a letter written by the principal, the altercation took place at lunch at Radloff Middle School. It began as a verbal confrontation, but turned physical.

School official said other teachers responded immediately and broke up the fight.

The system has removed the teacher in question from the classroom pending the outcome of an investigation.

The school's principal, Sarah Skinner, said in a statement, "A situation like this is very unusual for our school and I assure you this is not the kind of behavior we will tolerate from our staff. At no time is it appropriate for a teacher or adult in our school to place their hands on a child in anger."

There has been no word on what caused the altercation.

School officials did not confirm the teacher's identity.
