Fulton County officials make play to keep Braves

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Fulton County officials are attempting to make some 11th hour maneuvers to convince the Atlanta Braves to stay at Turner Field.

Last week, the Braves announced plans to move the team to a $672 million stadium and mixed-use development to be constructed at the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285 in Cobb County.

Fulton County Commissioners said they were disappointed to hear the news. Commissioner Liz Hausmann insinuated that Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed dropped the ball.

"All the focus that was given to the Falcons, it was, I think, also very important -- to have this situation happen on the heels of that is almost shocking," Hausmann said.

The Braves plan to build to build an entertainment complex around its new stadium.  Fulton County Commissioners noted that the deal isn't done yet.

"There is a big if as to whether or not Cobb County is going to be able to cross all of the "t's" and dot all of the "i's" to make this deal happen,' said Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts.

Pitts persuaded the other commissioners to sign on to a resolution urging the baseball club to stay downtown.  However, the resolution doesn't include a financial incentive for the team to remain in Fulton County.

"Well, there is no money. But I thought it was important," Pitts said. "What I wanted to do today was to put us on record in support of keeping the braves here if, in fact, there is any opportunity to keep them here. The Cobb County deal is not a done deal. "

Reed has said that the Braves simply made a business decision as Cobb County has promised to provide almost half of the $672 million for the new construction.
