Pastor seeks answers in aspiring musician's death

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A local pastor is pleading for answers about the murder of his son.

Family members believe someone out there knows more about Sammy Gantt's death. They're hoping a cash reward will encourage someone to come forward with information.

Lauronna Phelps said her son, Sammy Gantt, was a true musical talent. She said he wrote his first song at 6.

"His biological father is deceased and his first song that he wrote was actually to his biological father at 6 years old," Phelps said.

By 13, Sammy had released his first CD and began performing at Yung Swagg. At 22, he released a CD under the record label Blank Productions.

According to Gantt's family, his music was playing inside the club Da Office in northwest Atlanta on Nov. 2 when Gantt got into an argument with the owner of his record label.

"The altercation stemmed from Sammy's music being played inside of the niteclub because Sammy was in the process of leaving the record label," said Eusebio Phelps, Sammy's stepfather.

Witnesses say Atlanta police were called to Da Office.  By the time officers arrived, most people had left. Gantt's family says a group of men followed him home. Once there, someone pulled a gun and shot him in the chest.

The family has offered a $2,000 reward to help find the person who took the young father's life.

"We want you to turn yourself in for what you've done. We want you to answer for what you've done," said Eusebio Phelps.

Gantt's mother says while it doesn't help heal her pain, she knows her son died pursing his dream of music.

The family said they don't want Gantt's fans or friends to retaliate, they just want the killer to surrender to authorities.
