"Comet of the Century" Growing Brighter

Posted: Updated:

The European Southern Observatory has released this new photo of the Comet ISON as it approaches its closest point to the sun.

That will happen on November 28th, and just about a week before that date, the comet is becoming brighter and brighter, according to some reports, visible to the naked eye.

But that might not be such a good thing for stargazers.   Astronomers are concerned that  the brightening might be a sign that ISON will break up before it reaches the closest point to the sun.

The gas being emitted from the comet has be glowing more intensely over the last couple of week, indicating that the sun's heat is causing ice crystals in the center of the comet to change form and throw large plumes of gas into space.

That means the comet could vaporize before it reaches its apex on the 28th, but if it survives, it could create a brilliant spectacle in the morning sky.
