U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan supports the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

It is a single set of education standards for K-12 and it has been adopted by 45 states and D.C.

In a controversial quote at a meeting of state superintendents in Richmond, Va., Duncan said that some "white suburban moms" oppose the standard because it reveals "their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were, and their school isn't quite as good as they thought they were."

Duncan apologized and called his choice of words "clumsy."

"I just want every child in the United States to be prepared to be successful in a globally competitive economy,” says Duncan. “Raising the bar is hard work. It is the right thing to do. Better communicating with all parents. Having parents ask the hard questions: 'Are my children really ready to compete with children in India and China and Singapore and South Korea for the jobs of the future?’”
