MYFOXNY.COM -

The actor Steve Buscemi led a bone-marrow drive to potentially save the life of Owen Hogan, 2, who has been diagnosed with a potentially fatal blood disorder. Owen's father is a firefighter at Engine Company 216 in Brooklyn.

Friends of Firefighters Inc., which is organizing the drive, hopes that a potential match for Owen will be found if enough people register as bone marrow donors. If you are interested, you can stop by Friends of Firefighters Headquarters, 199 Van Brunt Street, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11231. The remaining hours are Wednesday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
