Soldier surprises son at Smyrna school

SMYRNA, Ga. -

A 10-year-old Smyrna boy got an early holiday present when his dad surprised him at school by coming home early from Afghanistan.

Fourth-grader Anthony Green hadn't seen his dad since February when 1st Sgt. Andre Green was deployed to a remote part of Afghanistan.

For the past nine months, 1st Sgt. Green planned the top secret mission to surprise his son at Teasly Elementary School.

"I thought it would be a good idea to just come up here and surprise him that way since we're so close," said Green.

The boy's mother said that the 10-year-old expected his father back for the holidays, but didn't know exactly when he'd see him again.

After landing on Monday night, Green stunned his son at school Tuesday morning.

After an emotional hug, the excited son took his father to class for show and tell.

"I know Anthony always talks about his dad nearly daily, always says he's his hero and just as well his father always talks about him and says how proud he is of his son so I know that this is making both of their days," said Tanya Green, the boy's stepmother.

Anthony says he cannot wait to play XBox and football with his dad.

The family is asking for prayers for other military families this holiday season.
