CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Washington, Ill. father of four Jon Byler Dann hunkered down in his basement with his kids, ages 8, 5, 2 ½ and 1 ½, as a tornado tore through his town on Sunday. But one member of the family was missing – their dog, Maggie.

The Weather Channel reports the 11-year-old dog has been a part of Byler Dann's family since she was 4 months old.

She was so scared during the storm that she refused to leave her kennel, no matter how much the 37-year-old man tried to coax her to come to the safety of the basement. When conditions became too strong, he had to leave Maggie outside and return to the basement to protect his kids.

After the wind died down, Byler Dann found that his home of five years had been completely leveled. Despite the family's search, Maggie was nowhere to be found. Byler Dann assumed she perished in the storm.

More than a day later, the family heard barking from beneath the rubble. They dug deep and miraculously found Maggie, wrapped in a carpet. The dog appeared to be hurt, but Byler Dann felt overwhelming relief to find his beloved pet alive.

Byler Dann took Maggie to a local vet at Teegarden Veterinary Clinic, where she was checked for internal injuries and treated for broken bones. But they say she will be just fine.
