Reports: Carlos Ruiz To Re-Sign With Phillies

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Free-Agent catcher Carlos Ruiz is re-signing with the Phillies, sources tell FOX Sports senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal.

According to reports, Ruiz is signing a three-year contract worth almost $26 million.

Ruiz, who will turn 35 in January, started playing for the Phillies in 2006, was a part of their World Series championship in 2008 and a run back to the series in 2009.

The Panamanian catcher is best known for his handling of the Phillies pitching staff, but he had his best year offensively in 2012, when he hit .325 with 16 home runs and went to the All-Star Game.

Then, he was suspended in November 2012 for 25 games without pay by the MLB after testing positive for an amphetamine, which reports indicated were due to use of Adderall.

Ruiz returned to the field in April, but "Chooch, as he's known to teammates and fans, suffered a hamstring injury about a month later and missed some more time.

He finished the year batting .268, six points below his career average, with 5 home runs.

As Ruiz cleaned out his locker to become a free agent, the Phillies decided to part ways with pitching coach Rich Dubee after a rough year for the staff, giving new manager Ryne Sandburg a chance to pick his own pitching coach.

Last week, there were reports that the Toronto Blue Jays had offered Ruiz to a two-year deal, but his agent wanted a third year.

FOX 29's Howard Eskin said it would be "a mistake" for the Phillies to give the aging catcher a three-year deal.
