Lithia Springs man convicted in marriage fraud case

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal prosecutors in Atlanta say a man has been convicted in a scheme arranging marriages for those living in the country without legal permission.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said Friday 51-year-old Rex Anyanwu of Lithia Springs was found guilty of visa fraud and conspiracy.

A phone number for Anyanwu could not be located, and an afterhours email sent to his attorneys was not immediately returned.

Yates say Anyanwu ran a "fraudulent marriage factory" for at least 11 years. Prosecutors say witnesses testified in court about how they were paid to marry people living in the country illegally. Those individuals also testified they had paid as much as $10,000 for the arrangement.

A sentencing hearing has been set for Jan. 27.
