Fraser motel owner charged after elderly parents found tied to bed, lying in waste

The owner of a Fraser motel is accused of abusing his elderly parents, by keeping them in an unsanitary hotel room tied to a bed.

Eric Gala, 55, of Lenox Twp. has been charged with two counts of Vulnerable Adult Abuse after Fraser officials said they discovered Gala's parents, 92 and 78 years old, tied to a bed at the Flamingo Motel. The Fraser Department of Public Safety found the parents lying in their own feces and urine, and say flies were buzzing throughout the room. The room also lacked hot water, heat and lighting.

Lt. Dan Kolke of the department says Gala was interviewed, and admitted his parents rarely bathed. Gala also said in the interview that he has guardianship over his parents, and tied them to the bed so they will not leave.

Fox 2's Andrea Isom reports that guardianship has been removed and the parents are under the care of the state right now. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Each felony Gala faces is a four-year felony. He was released on a $20,000 personal bond.
