ATLANTA -

A trooper says he was forced to shoot a suspect after a brief pursuit through southwest Atlanta on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol tells FOX 5 News that the trooper spotted a reported stolen vehicle on Georgia Highway 166 near Barge Road. When the trooper attempted to pull over the 2011 Acura, the vehicle took off.

Troopers say the driver turned off Highway 166 into the Mellwood neighborhood. He ended up driving around a cul-de-sac on the south end of Susan Lane and hitting the trooper's cruiser that was blocking his way out.

Alexander Streeter, 20, of Columbus, climbed out of the passenger-side window and attempted to take off on foot. The trooper was able to catch up with him and was trying to take him to the ground when Streeter pulled out a gun from his waistband.

The trooper opened fire on the suspect, hitting him. Streeter was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition was not known, but he was conscious and alert at the time of transport.

The other occupant, Dvante Pollard, 21, also of Columbus, was also taken into custody. Investigators say he and Streeter have outstanding warrants in Columbus.

The trooper was not injured in the incident. He was placed on paid administration leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the GBI.

Charges stemming from the incident against Streeter and Pollard are pending.
