PD: Hit-and-run driver flees from officers, rams patrol car

PEORIA, Ariz. -

A suspect allegedly was involved in a hit-and-run before hitting a police patrol car on Friday morning.

Peoria police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto says they received calls about an erratic driver on Happy Valley Road, near Loop 303, around 6:30 a.m.

A short time later, the driver allegedly collided with a vehicle head-on, but drove away.

Officers attempted to pull the driver over, but say he refused to stop. Stop sticks were thrown onto the road before the driver veered off and rammed into a police car.

"We tried on several occasions to get him to pull ove to stop, he refuses," said Jacinto.  "We've seen him run other vehicles off the road.. he's now rammed at least one car and kept going.  We decided that we need to put out stop sticks.. we need to get this driver to stop."

An officer standing next to the car jumped out of the way before he could be hit.

Police were able to get the suspect, a 51-year-old Glendale man, out of his car and take him into custody.

Jacinto says they expect the suspect was impaired.

The suspect's name hasn't been released.

No one was injured in this incident.

The northbound and southbound exits were closed on Loop 303 at Happy Valley while officers invesigated the scene.
