Air Force Sgt. surprises daughters at school with early return from Afghanistan

WALDORF, Md. -

She has been serving her country far away from home, but a Charles County mother returned and got a chance to surprise her two young children Thursday when she dropped in at their elementary school in Waldorf.

The emotional reunion took place at William B. Wade Elementary School.

Any school day that ends in cupcakes is a pretty sweet day. It is unbeatable when the person who marches down the hall to make the cupcake delivery is Air Force Sgt. D'Andrea Jacobs.

Jacobs surprised her 9-year-old daughter, Karmen, who had not seen her mom in six months. And the tears were flowing when she first saw her mother enter the classroom. A big hug was exchanged and Karmen’s classmates clapped during the embrace.

When asked what the hardest thing was about having her mother being away, Karmen responded, “Everything.”

Sgt. Jacobs returned from Afghanistan a few days early.

She said her heart was “beating fast, beating hard. It's kind of hard to breathe.”

In the classroom next door, she also surprised her 11-year-old daughter, Aaliyah.

Six months is the longest they have been apart. But Jacobs still knows her girls and she had a prediction.

“One would be excited and the other one would probably cry. I was right,” she said.

Mom and daughters did see each other via FaceTime on their phones while she was away.

“One would read to me. One would play violin. Karmen actually gave me a tutorial of how to put makeup on,” laughed Jacobs, who said makeup is not her expertise.

Jacobs is meeting her daughter's teachers and seeing their new school for the first time.

She is pretty sure they have gotten a lot taller, but on this day, nobody stands taller than mom.
