Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

Schauer campaign plays rapid response game

After the Detroit Free Press took a solid week to examine the charter school system, warts and all, the Democratic candidate for governor smartly responded with a laundry list of reforms.
After the Detroit Free Press took a solid week to examine the charter school system, warts and all, the Democratic candidate for governor smartly responded with a laundry list of reforms.

Of the two political parties, the Republicans continually have problems with the size of government.  Everyone credits former President Reagan with setting the tone for this debate with his infamous, "government is the problem," rhetoric from years ago.

And the two sides have been at it ever since not only regarding the size of government per se but the size of its big nose, too.

In recent days that 'nose" has been into personal lives with who knows how much spying.  Both parties are distraught.

The GOP talks a good game about keeping government out of our personal lives but turns out on this one bill, Democrats are there, too as both parties have inserted the government into the private lives of some of our citizens.

Take the recent legislation in the state legislature on making sure welfare recipients don't use their Bridge Cards in strip joints, casinos, horse tracks and liquor stores.

Rep. Rose Mary Robinson (D-Detroit) rejected the interference as picking on people who are having a hard time financially.

But the R's were not buying this sympathy for poor people and apparently neither were other Democrats.

"We must end the abuse to our welfare system that harms our most vulnerable," Rep. Margaret O'Brien (R-Portage) advised her colleagues.

And to prove that even Democrats can handle a little government interference from time to time, they overwhelmingly joined with all the Republicans to approve these measures on 108-1 votes.

"I guess people perceive it as good politics, " Ms. Robinson lamented.

She may be onto something there but don't lose sight of the fact that backers of this argue there is some merit to making sure those on the roles don't "waste" their money in strip joints, etc.  Which is maybe why 108 folks voted for it.
