MARICOPA, Ariz. -

With the help of DNA, a 19-year-old was sentenced to prison followed by lifetime probation for alleged attempted sexual assault and other charges.

According to the Pinal County Attorney's office, Shakir Thomas allegedly burglarized a Maricopa home on March  8 and then kidnapped and attempted to sexually assault a woman who lived there.

Maricopa police found items stolen from the burglary while responding to a noise complaint at a home a few days later. Thomas was at the home and matched the description of the sexual assault suspect.

Authorities got a DNA search warrant for Thomas and it was taken to a lab for testing.

A positive match was confirmed and he plead guilty to attempted first degree burglary, kidnapping of a dangerous nature and attempted sexual assault in September.

Thomas was sentenced to 10.5 years in prison and consecutive sentences of lifetime probation and an additional five years of probation.
