ALEXANDRIA, Va. -

Prominent transportation expert Ron Kirby was murdered in his Alexandria home, probably sometime in the morning on Veteran’s Day, according to Alexandria Police.

Kirby was 69, and since 1987, had worked extensively on regional transportation issues for the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments (COG).

Rosemont is generally a very quiet, residential neighborhood just outside of Old Town. Police tape now surrounds the house on Elm Street on which Kirby and his wife lived.

Kirby was probably the foremost transportation expert in the Washington, D.C. region. Fellow staff members at the Council of Governments say learning about Kirby’s violent death was like a “punch in the gut.”

Gerald Miller, a long-time COG employee, called Kirby, “the most fair, gentle, compassionate person I have ever known.”

Alexandria police say a relative called them after finding Kirby unresponsive in his home at about 12:30 p.m. on Veteran’s Day. Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook told reporters at an afternoon briefing that Kirby was the victim of a homicide who was killed by “multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.”

Police worked the crime scene into Monday evening, and then, in the daylight, searched the area for a possibly disposed-of weapon. A chemical-sniffing dog from the city’s sheriff’s department aided in the search.

Kirby lived in the Elm Street house with his wife, but according to a source familiar with the investigation, she was not the relative who discovered the body. In fact, Alexandria police looked for the wife to notify her of the murder.

Police would not say whether any item of value was taken after the fatal shooting of Kirby. But Police Chief Cook hinted that investigators are looking for some other kind of motive.

Cook told reporters, “We are not thinking that there is cause for alarm for neighbors at this time.”

Transportation expert Kirby was seen alive in the morning on Veteran’s Day. Police are asking anyone who might have information about the murder to give them a call.

COG Executive Director Chuck Bean's Statement Regarding the Death of Ron Kirby

All of the officials and employees of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Transportation Planning Board are devastated by the loss of our colleague, Ron Kirby.

Dr. Kirby, one of the region's leading experts on transportation planning, was a key figure in all aspects of our work on regional planning and collaboration. He guided the work of the Transportation Planning Board for more than 26 years. His deep knowledge and wise counsel assisted local, state and national officials in reaching consensus on the major transportation issues over the years.

More importantly, he was a trusted colleague and a dear friend to all of us at the Council and his associates around the region. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family at this difficult time.
