New Jersey Powerball Winner: Attorneys Debate Wife's Claim On Money

Posted: Updated:

A New Jersey man won $338 million in the Powerball, but his ex-girlfriend has sued to obtain some of that money. This has been in the news recently, so Good Day brought in attorneys to analyze the situation.

Although the couple has been together for 10 years and have a kid together, Attorney Ken Rothweiler says that there are no palimony laws in New Jersey. Therefore, "If you are the lawyer, the strongest argument you can make is that they were business partners. They owned a grocery store together. These were business proceeds that were spent on the lottery ticket."

Jennifer Brandt disagrees with Rothweiler completely.

"She has absolutely no claim to this money," she said. "Basically he got lucky. He took his money from the business, went out, bought a lottery ticket and hit a jackpot. Too bad for her."

Rothweiler says that in this case, it's all about the facts because the law is not on her side.

"She's trying to claim that somehow they have a marital-type relationship and he owes her something. She is only going to get that money through child support," said Brandt in rebuttal.

Watch the whole debate in the video above, and hear what Rothweiler recommends to Pedro Quezada.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
