Tony McEwing: News Anchor And The Beast

Posted: Updated:

For the last 20 years, Tony McEwing has been delivering the news Monday through Friday on the FOX 11 Morning News. He's always professional, knowledgeable and funny when the moment calls for it. That's the Tony viewers know.

Here's the Tony I know. He's a beast!!! Well, at the gym, anyway. That man works out like nobody's business!! No wonder, he's got those huge biceps to die for.

Awhile ago, I went to Tony's gym. No, not to work out with him. I was there to take photos of Tony in action. He works out 3 times a week. He does cardio and weights. I'm talking about hardcore weight lifting. It's the kind that leaves you out of breath just watching it.

He wasn't always this disciplined. Tony says he started working out when he saw himself on television and thought he looked fat. He decided to join the gym and the rest is history.  Exercise is now part of his life--kind of like taking a shower. Tony works with his trainer Erik Flowers at a small gym in Silver Lake.  His advice to anyone wanting to lose weight? "It's all about expending more calories than you take in," says Tony. He says, "Don't set unrealistic goals.  Set incremental goals and you'll succeed."

Here are some things I learned about Tony:

As a teen his nickname was "Saint". Saint is the name his high school friends came up with because he wouldn't drink or smoke or do anything that would get him in trouble.

Tony was also a church musician. He played the piano and organ and he trained many choirs for different churches.

He's been in the news business for 32 years.  And when you ask him why he thinks he's lasted so long in this cut throat business, he replies with, "I killed off all of my enemies."  Then he laughs uncontrollably.

I asked him, "What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?"

Tony answered, "I'll be dead." After we laughed some more, I asked one last question, "So, what do you do for fun?" Tony answers, "I'm boring. I'm completely boring. I have no life Gina. Thank you for reminding me."

It's no secret that Microsoft has struggled in the hardware department so I can't say whether the Surface Pro 3 will be the hero Microsoft needs but I can say it is the modern computing experience users deserve. I love it and think you should too! Read on to find out why.
