Coroner: Ga. inmate dead after fight with cellmate

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The Muscogee County coroner says a 57-year-old jail inmate is dead, apparently after a fight with his cellmate.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports coroner Buddy Bryan said he arrived at the Muscogee County Jail early Saturday to find the inmate dead and "extremely bloody" from lacerations to his face and head. Bryan said the dead inmate's cellmate was nearby and handcuffed.

Maj. Randy Robertson of the sheriff's office confirmed "inmate-on-inmate violence" appeared to be behind the death.

The dead inmate's name was not immediately released pending notification of his family. Robertson said no charges had been filed as of Saturday morning.

Two other inmates have died at the Muscogee County Jail since Oct. 24. One died from a brain aneurysm. The other's cause of death has not been released.
