Surveillance video shows people running for cover after shooting at Detroit barbershop

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Surveillance video at nearby businesses captured the moments after gunfire erupted inside a barbershop on Seven Mile Road Wednesday just before 6 p.m. Several people can be seen looking over their shoulders and running for cover down the street.

Saifur Rahma was working in a business across the street from the barbershop when four men and two children ran to his building for cover. You can see them in the video, locking the door and laying on the ground. Rahma tells Asher he was scared and the kids were crying.

Police say the incident started when two 2004 Impalas, one white and one black in color, pulled into the alley behind Al's Barbershop, and shots were then fired at a truck. Someone inside the barber heard the noise and opened the back door, and that's when the shooter used a high-powered rifle to fire several rounds, police say. As many as 30 people were inside.

Those people are believed to have been illegally gambling, but the shooting was not due to a gambling dispute, as originally thought by police. Police now say the shooting was in retaliation to a recent murder, and the targets of the retaliation were inside the barber. Detroit Police Chief James Craig calls it an "ongoing feud."

The gunfire struck nine people; three of those people have died. They are Joezelle Williams, 61; his stepson Kevin Perryman, 40; and his cousin Bryian Williams, 29. Police do not know if these men were the intended victims or victims caught in the crowd.

"The patriarch of our family is gone, for something that's totally senseless and it does not make any sense," says Brandie Davis. She was the fiance of Bryian Williams.

Police do have one person in custody they are calling a "person of interest." He was arrested in Rochester Wednesday night on an unrelated felonious assault charge.
