Chicago expands free mammogram program

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago is expanding a program that provides breast cancer screenings on the city's South Side.

In a news release, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office says the city will invest about $200,000 in Chicago's mammography program to allow another 1,500 uninsured women to receive free mammograms at Roseland Community Hospital, bringing the total number of women who can get the free screenings to about 5,000.

U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly says the services are critical in and around the Roseland community because the area has the highest rates of premature breast cancer deaths in Chicago.

Mammography services are also available at Chicago Department of Public Health clinics around the city.
