Police: DNA recovered from victim matches suspect in 1984 killing

WASHINGTON -

District of Columbia police say DNA recovered from the body of a woman who was killed nearly 30 years ago matches that of the man who was charged in her death this week.

Joe Anthony Barber was arrested at his Woodbridge, Va., home early Tuesday and charged in the 1984 death of Rachel Cox, who was found fatally stabbed.

He is due in court Wednesday afternoon. Online court records don't list a lawyer.

Charging documents say a DNA sample taken during an autopsy of Cox matched the profile of Barber, who was released from prison in 2004 after being convicted in the sexual assault of a young girl.

Police say Barber denied during questioning that he ever knew Cox or had a relationship with her.
