Police: Alcohol a factor in fatal garbage truck crash

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta authorities now say alcohol played a role in the fatal crash of a city garbage truck.

The crash happened Saturday afternoon on Interstate 75 at Cleveland Avenue. A passenger in the garbage truck was ejected and killed. The driver was badly injured and remains hospitalized.

A criminal investigation has determined that alcohol played a role in the crash, according to Carlos Campos from Mayor Kasim Reed's office.

Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Bond said that he received word that an open container may have been found in the cab of the truck. FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports that sources told him vodka may have been in the open container.

Authorities are seeking arrest warrants against the driver of the garbage truck on charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence, and failure to maintain lane, Campos said in a statement.

The investigation into the fatal accident continues.
