Police: Suspect in Atlanta armed robbery is 14

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Police said the suspect who allegedly pulled a gun on a local couple early Tuesday is just 14 years old.

Kristopher Mason said he was stunned to learn that the suspected armed robber who held him up in a shopping center parking lot in southeast Atlanta is a young teenager.

"When it happened, I wasn't afraid for my life or anything or for my property, I was more sad that someone would be desperate enough to go through that kind of crime, that type of action. So it is horrifying to know it's a 14-year-old," Masons aid.

Mason said that the teen demanded money taking his friend's cellphone when they told him they didn't have cash.

"As soon as he got something, he jumped back into the passenger side of the car and they drove off," Mason said.

Officers captured the teen a couple of hours later in south DeKalb County hiding behind a house, Mason believes it was only then that the boy realized how much trouble he was in.

"After they caught him and the police went up and officially arrested him, he began to cry because he knew that he seriously messed up," Mason said.

The 14-year-old faces a long list of charges including weapons possession and armed robbery. Police said he was already wanted on a burglary warrant out of DeKalb County when he was arrested Tuesday.

Mason wonders if teens committing such violent crimes truly realize the repercussions.

"It sucks because I know friends who have been down that road and it's really hard to recover once you've made a mistake like that," Mason said.
