Church hit by thieves stealing A/C units for parts

WOODBRIDGE, Va. -

A Virginia church is putting in the insurance claim for tens of thousands of dollars after being hit by thieves, and they are not the only alleged victims.

Prince William County police arrested four people accused of stealing six of the heating ventilation/air conditioning units from the First Church of the Nazarene in Woodbridge.

Christopher Bowers, Dylan Moran and Jay Fitzgerald are charged with grand larceny and obtaining money by false pretenses. Andrea McMichael is charged with receiving stolen property and obtaining money by false pretenses.

They were taken into custody after a tip led investigators to a home where several disassembled HVAC units were found.

Surveillance video captured some of the criminal activity at the church just after midnight on October 30. The estimated loss is $48,000.

Another building along Quantico Gateway Drive was also targeted. The loss there is estimated to be $14,000.

Prince William County Police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok tells FOX 5 investigators are looking into whether other recent cases in the county are connected.

At the church, Pastor Athan Burch says several offices and half of the sanctuary, where services are held, will be without heat and air conditioning until replacement units can be installed.

He says of the financial loss, "If the insurance doesn't cover it, we're in a bad situation. Although we take care of our business week in and week out, we really don't have that kind of money."

Even if insurance covers the expense, Burch says their premium went up $800 last year after a storm damaged the roof. This incident will mean another significant increase.
