Stephenson High holds safety meeting after student shot

ATLANTA -

A weekend shooting at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain has parents concerned about school safety.

At a meeting on Tuesday, Principal Michael Jones outlined specifics of the shooting to about 150 concerned parents.

The high school football player was arriving at the school to watch game films around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday when there was some sort of confrontation between some players and a group of teens who don't attend the school. The junior was apparently struck by a stray bullet in the abdomen. He was treated and released from a hospital.

Parents were told security has been beefed up at the start and end of the school day. They were also told that school police are keeping an eye out for troublemakers who don't belong on campus.

Parents were also advised to track their children's social media habits. School officials said online chatter was connected to the shooting, which had its roots from an earlier confrontation.

The principal said he had a talk with the football team.

"I needed them to know that retaliation, if that is their thought, makes no sense," said Jones.

The injured student was released from the hospital on Tuesday, Jones told parents.

Police are still searching for the shooter in the incident.
