Arrest made in 1984 killing of woman in DC

WASHINGTON -

District of Columbia police say they've arrested a convicted sex offender in the 1984 killing of a woman.

Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham says police used DNA evidence to link Joe Anthony Barber to the killing.

The 55-year-old Barber was arrested early Tuesday at his Woodbridge, Va. home. It wasn't clear if he had a lawyer. He has not yet appeared in court.

He has been charged with first-degree felony murder in the death of 43-year-old Rachel Cox, who was found sexually assaulted and stabbed in her apartment.

Barber was released from prison in 2004 after being convicted of assaulting a girl in the same neighborhood where the killing took place.

Newsham says the arrest shows how advances in technology can help crack cold cases.
