HOT lanes price makes for record-setting commute

Posted: Updated:

No PhotoShop here.  This is the price drivers who wanted to use the I-85 HOT lanes were paying around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning-- and it's a record-setter.

Drivers who wanted to travel in those HOT lanes from Old Peachtree Road to Shallowford Road would pay $8.50-- the highest price ever seen in the HOT lanes.  In September, it topped $8 for the first time, and that's happened a lot since then.

During the afternoon rush hour drive, drivers had to pay $6.20 to drive the entire 15.5 mile toll route.

The toll lane price rises when congestion is increased on the interstate. Only a small percentage of drivers pay the full toll. The average toll is around $2, according to State Road and Tollway Authority officials.

Buses, van pools and car pools of three or more ride for free in the HOT lane.

Plans remain in place to build more toll lanes on I-75 north and south of Atlanta.
