More Details Emerge About LAX Shooting Suspect

Posted: Updated:
PENNSVILLE, N.J. -

Former Salesianum School classmates of accused Los Angeles International Airport shooter Paul Ciancia say he stood out, but they never would have expected this.

One former student who did not want to be identified said the 2008 graduate was always quiet; "He didn't' talk. Not a word. I didn't hear a word out of him maybe in four years."

Investigators say the suspect walked into LAX and pulled an AR-15 semi automatic rifle from a bag and started firing at TSA officers Friday morning.

One person died, and several more were injured-before Ciancia was taken under arrest.

The former classmate says Ciancia played french horn in the school band, but otherwise was a loner, and has no idea about his motives.

But the feds paint a different picture, saying he had a note in his bag suggesting a beef with the TSA, saying he'd be happy if he killed just one officer.

"Black, white, yellow, brown I don't discriminate" the note read according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

Meanwhile neighbors near the Pennsville, N.J., family home where the suspect lived a year-and-a-half ago are especially stunned.

"It's just like a big shock to us around here. It's not something that would happen."

"It was just mind-boggling. I just couldn't comprehend that."

The police chief says he's known the suspect's family for years and got a call from the shooter's father after the brother got an alarming text message of a suicidal nature.

Pennsville police then called the LAPD.

"Our procedure is, if someone is concerned about a family member, we call the local police department and do a welfare check," said Cummings, Pennsville Police Chief.

But it was too late… the chief says the suspect was already at the airport.

"Mr. Ciancia called me and said he just saw it on TV and thinks his son is involved. That's when everything started with the FBI."
