ATLANTA -

The speed limit is going up along a big section of Interstate 285, and it's happening today.  Drivers will now be able to drive 65 miles per hour-- legally-- on only the south side of I-285, but not the north side.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says traffic volume is lower on the south side, so the higher speed limit is okay.  It's not the same case for the north side because volume is much higher, so the speed limit there will stay at 55.

The 27-mile stretch of the highway that will see the change is below I-20.  The change could confuse some drivers, and there's a chance for even more confusion next fall when the northern arch of I-285 goes to variable speed limits.

GDOT workers took the covers off the new speed limit signs around midday on Friday, so the new 65 MPH speed limit was in effect on the south side for the Friday afternoon rush hour.
