Joe Mantegna: We Owe It To These Men And Women Of The Military

Posted: Updated:

The Chicago Cubs finished the recent baseball season in last place, more than 30 games behind the National League pennant winning St. Louis Cardinals.  That was difficult for long-time Cubs fan Joe Mantegna to watch.

Even more difficult was that the hated Red Sox went on to win the World Series.  Red Sox and Cubs fans used to be able to commiserate becuase neither team had won a World Series in decades, the Cubs in 1908 and the Red Sox in 1918.  But now that the Red Sox have broken the Curse of the Bambino and won three World Series in past ten years, Cubs fans feel their disappointment ever so much more.

Will the Cubs make it out of the cellar? And win the pennant and the World Series?  Maybe not in real life, but that's exactly what happens in the famous play "Bleacher Bums," the 1977 play based on an idea by Joe Mantegna.

"Someone once asked me, 'What if the Cubs finally win a World Series? Would your play seem relevant then?'" Mantegna told ESPN.com. "I laughed and said, 'I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.'"
