WASHINGTON -

What the next governor of Virginia would mean to teachers is getting a fresh look in the race between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

The competing messages from the campaigns came Thursday, less than a week before Tuesday's election.

McAuliffe's campaign is releasing an ad the features a middle school science teacher from Virginia's Prince William County. Kellie Blair Hardt says Cuccinelli's education plan to divert state money from public schools to be given to private ones would lead to teacher layoffs.

Pat Mullins, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, says McAuliffe would hurt teachers because he supports the national health care law. To comply with it, several schools have reduced part-time workers' hours so the districts don't have to provide them with health care plans.
