Police Investigate Vineland Teen Hit Two Cars

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE:  Vineland, NJ teens will gather tomorrow night for a vigil in memory of their beloved classmate - 14 year old Alexa Strittmatter - who was killed in a traffic accident earlier this week.

The teens got together to organize this vigil. It will be held at 6pm Sunday at Vineland High School North, 3010 E Chestnut Ave.

"All the classes were very mournful. Everyone was really sad and with tears," recalls Vineland High student Ciana Perez. She's describing the day at school after learning 14-year old Alexa Strittmatter, a freshman at the school's north campus, was hit by two cars and died at the hospital.

"Some classes had a moment of silence for her. It was just a sad atmosphere," said another student.

Police say Alexa was walking to the bus stop with her older brother and sister just before seven Wednesday morning. They were in front of their home on South Main Street. Alexa was in the street when she was hit by one car and then a second.

Vineland Police Chief Timothy Codispoti said, "Both drivers were there when officers arrived. Both have been cooperative. The investigation is in the very preliminary stages to determine exactly the sequence of events that led to this tragedy."  Police say they've impounded both cars, drawn blood from the drivers and interviewed witnesses. Meanwhile students and staff at Vineland High struggled to get through the day knowing Alexa will never return.

"I just felt bad about the whole situation," said a student who said he knows Alexa's brother.

Ciana Perez added, "We know that when her sister and brother come back to school we have to be strong for them."

Late Wednesday no charges had been filed against either driver but police say the investigation continues.
