A man has been shot and killed by police after a fight broke out at a homeless shelter in Fort Belvoir.

Officers responded to a 911 call at a homeless shelter in the 9100 block of Richmond Highway.

At around 6 p.m. Wednesday, two Fairfax County officers showed up at the Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter and tried to break up the fight when one of the men turned and assaulted an officer. That is when one of the officers on the scene shot and killed the man.

The man killed has been identified as James Bryant. He was a resident at the homeless shelter.

Some of the neighbors say four or five people were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Two separate investigations are underway by Fairfax County police. The criminal investigations bureau is looking at the criminal aspect of the fight and the assault while internal affairs is making sure use of force policy was followed.
