Karen Gentry bought a Virginia Lottery Cash 5 ticket months ago at a 7-Eleven convenience store on North Kings Highway. She put it in a box in her kitchen and didn't really think about it again until this Tuesday.

She was watching a television news report which said the winner had to redeem the ticket by 5 p.m. Her numbers matched and she rushed to the Virginia Lottery Service Center in Woodbridge to cash it in.

Gentry works in carpet and flooring sales. At the 7-Eleven where she purchased her ticket six months ago, fellow shoppers were happy for her. Some said they too sometimes buy lottery tickets and forget about them.

You might be surprised how many prizes go unclaimed. Lottery officials say last year $12 million worth of unclaimed money went to the state Literary Fund for educational purposes.
