Caught On Tape: Two Robbery Suspects At Pretzel Company Busted By Police

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA -

"This could have went bad very quickly," says the owner of the Center City Pretzel Company after video of surveillance cameras caught two masked men, carrying guns.

They walked into the Pretzel Company on Washington Avenue, quickly tied up one of the employees and took him to the rear office looking for cash.

"He's brave and I'm glad that he's okay," Erika Bonnett told Fox 29.

The employee smartly left the cash drawer at the front of the store open. So when a customer, a third district patrol officer came in minutes later and saw the open cash drawer, they knew something was wrong.

"It was quick thinking on his part by leaving the drawer open so that if anyone came in a saw the drawer open they would realize there is a problem," Bonnett explained.

"Very intelligent work on the store employee's part," said Captain Larry Nodiff of South Detectives.

The officer quickly figured out what was going on, ordered several people out of the store and called for backup. Third district uniformed officers arrived with their guns out and within seconds ordered the two gunmen and their hostage out of the office and made them lie down on the floor.

"Smart thinking and the quick reaction of the third district officer I think is what really made the difference," Bonnett added.

"Absolutely dangerous situation," Captain Nodiff said. "Good smart work by the manager. My hat is off to the officers that responded."

Police arrested 40 year old Donte Camp of Philadelphia and 43 year old Calvin Clark of Bensalem on armed robbery, unlawful restraint and weapons charges.

None of the employees or the police were hurt thanks to some smart thinking by the employee and the police.

"Two armed gunmen in the office with an employee, apparently they're desperate, desperate people do desperate things," Bonnett said. "We were lucky, very lucky. In 32 years this has never happened."

Camp and Clark are awaiting arraignment on the charges.

Police also credited a customer who walked in looking to buy a pretzel for helping police. The store employee was not hurt and the pretzel company opened back up about an hour later.

Police recovered $400 taken from the store. It was returned to the Pretzel Company.
