Cost of Falcons stadium rises by $200 million

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The cost of the new Atlanta Falcons stadium has risen to $1.2 billion. That's $200 million more than originally projected to build the new retractable stadium.

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority was briefed on Tuesday about the increased costs.  Architect Bill Johnson promised seats with no obstruction and easier access to the stadium.

Construction work on the stadium is scheduled to begin next April and be completed in March 2017.

So where is all the money going? Here's a breakdown:

*    $102 million will be spent on development and preconstruction.
*    $73 million for design and professional services
*   $77 million for systems and equipment
*   $948 million for construction and contingency funds.

Taxpayers won't fork over the extra money. The public portion of the plan, which is made up of funds raised from hotel-motel taxes, remains $200 million.

The NFL is chipping in another $200 million, with the remaining $800 million coming from the Falcons, team owner Arthur Blank and the sale of personal seat licenses.

While impressed by the images, fans who talked to FOX 5 said they are more concerned with the team's play on the field. The Falcons are currently 2-5.
