'Cowboys vs. Indians' spirit day offends students

PHOENIX -

Some Thunderbird High School student thought having cowboys vs. Indians day was a good idea -- given the school's mascot, a chief. But some students and parents today were outraged the administration allowed the day at the school.

Cowboys versus Indians -- that's the name of Thunderbird High School's spirit day, encouraging students to pick a side and dress up. But the day is rousing much more than spirits.

"I wanted to dress as a cowgirl because I thought it was cute but other than that I thought it was racist," says student Gladys Menzo

"I think it's a fun thing to do for a week if some people get upset about it it's just how you look at it," says student Chase Bray.

One Native American student at the school posted on FOX 10's Facebook page about the day, writing "it's not right." The student says he met with the school principal about his concerns -- but today spirit day went as planned.

His parents, Valerie and Buddy Tubinaghtewa, told FOX 10: "This is extremely offensive [that] Native American students are subjected to such pointless stereotyping in a public school setting."

The student council came up with the idea for the day as part of homecoming week, and the student body voted for it.

"Our date got approved by administration and so it went as planned but people didn't like it," says Andrew Wan, student council president.

Parents and students met with the principal Thursday morning. The school district is now coming out, saying the principal admitted the day was a mistake.

In a statement a district spokesperson told FOX 10: "It was an unfortunate administrative error to allow the day to occur. The school is reviewing its practices of spirit week to avoid any similar instances in the future"

"I think its ok, maybe aliens would have been better cause Indians, I don't know if it's racist towards other people," says student Nicole Wan.

I asked the school district if there was any talk of changing the mascot of the school, which is the Chiefs. They have not yet answered that question.
