Counterfeiters Hit Local Businesses

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. -

Police say some very good counterfeiters are hitting businesses in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

FOX's Chris O'Connell has details on how they're pulling it off. At least 4 stores maybe more were hit, and police need your help in catching them.

Video shows a man handing a clerk a fake $20 bill at an Upper Moreland Hoagie Shop. He bought a $1 iced tea then he got $19 back.

Less than a minute later his partner does the exact same thing, passing counterfeit cash and leaving small business owners short changed.

Angela Mills is the one in the video taking the phony money.

"We can't afford to lose a simple $20 it really does hurt us," Mills said. "You just mark it and that's good."

Police say the fake bills were so good they even passed the bill marker test.

Police say the men have been spotted in 4 different locations in the last month, a hoagie shop, a gas station in Upper Southampton and stores in Upper Dublin and Hilltown Townships.

"They take a bill of a lower denomination usually a 5 dollar bill or a 1 dollar bill and they actually wash the bill with a chemical or solvent and after washing it retains a lot of security features of the bill," Det. John Pasqueal of Lower Moreland Township Police said.

For workers and business owners, they're hoping these images will help catch the counterfeiters.

"They think they can come in here and do this to us because we are a small place we're not going to catch up to it," Angela Mills said. "They may not think we have the surveillance to catch them but we do."

If you have any information about these suspects please call The Lower Moreland Township Police at 215-947-3132
