Lighthouse Centennial Celebration, Happy Birthday Angels Gate

Posted: Updated:

I've never been in a lighthouse. But, I can't say that anymore. I just left Angels Gate Lighthouse. It's celebrating a big 100th birthday with a party Sunday at Cabrillo Beach. Allan Johnson, with Cabrillo Beach Boosters is maybe one of the tower's biggest boosters! He's the community group's Chief Financial Officer and is working to raise 1.8 million to rehabilitate the inside of the lighthouse. The outside was rehabbed a couple of years ago for the same amount. Combined that's $3.6 million dollars. Contrast that to the $36,000 it cost to build the lighthouse in 1913.

Angels Gate has been a guiding light for many cruise ships, oil tankers, fishing boats and others over the years. The shining light to signal where to enter the breakwater. It's solar-powered rotating green light coupled with 2 foghorn blasts every 30 seconds is the welcome to Los Angeles Harbor every vessel gets as it enters our waters.

Happy 100th Birthday Angels Gate!
