Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

This FOX Fursday, it's all about keeping your four-legged friends safe. Halloween can be scary for your pets and there are lots of dangers lurking.

But first, we need to talk about the danger facing pets involving jerky treats.

Emergency veterinarian Dr. Heather Loenser joined "Good Day Philadelphia" to share some tips and advice.

First, she discussed the mysterious outbreak of illness and deaths among pets who ate jerky treats. The FDA says most of the jerky treats have been made in China.

Then, she turned to Halloween safety tips. Here is a list of those:

  • Put lighted pumpkins out of reach
  • Keep electrical cords and wires out of sight
  • Chocolate, sugar-free candy, gum and baked products can be toxic
  • Tinfoil, cellophane, plastic candy wrappers and party supplies can be hazardous
  • Make sure your pet wears an ID tag even if they stay in the home
  • Give your pet a quiet, safe place to stay and give them a long-lasting treat
  • Make sure pet costumes don't restrict movement and add reflective tape

Should you need them, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.
