The family of an 8-year-old northern Virginia girl battling inoperable brain cancer received a $10,000 check Thursday night from Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon and area pizza chain Paisano's.
"Someone helped me to get where I'm at," Garcon told us outside the Fairfax pizza parlor. "Now I've got the ability to help someone else. Just try to keep the cycle going and just continue to give back and help somebody that really needs it."
Tara Sankner is that friend in need. She has met Garcon. He has come to her home for a visit.
"Since he's been with me," says Tara, "he's gotten more interested in cancer."
After handing over a cardboard replica of the huge check, Garcon mingled with fans, signing autographs and posing for pictures.
"My husband and I are just over the moon at what's happening," says Tara's mother, Tammy Sankner.
She explains the money will not only help with their overwhelming medical bills.
"It's definitely heart-warming," Mrs. Sankner told us outside the pizzeria. "It's overwhelming at times. It's great to see how the community is coming together to help our daughter."
It is a chance for everybody to take a moment to appreciate what is most important in life.
