Artist says man attempted to abduct her in Shirlington area of Arlington

Posted: Updated:

An Arlington artist says she was the victim of an attempted abduction early Saturday by a man with a knife who she says tried to force her into his waiting car.

"I was working on this scene of this tree right here," says Jeanne Hospod, standing on the sidewalk along S Arlington Mills Drive. "I like the way nature looks lit by artificial light at night."

That is why Hospod was painting a yellowing tree across the street at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Just as she was finishing and gathering up her supplies, the man appeared.

"I suddenly heard someone say behind me, 'What are you doing?' And then I noticed a leg," Hospod says. "And then I felt a hand on the back of my arm. I got up and turned around and there was a man facing me very close, and in his left hand, he had a knife. The car's idling right there on that corner, that intersection right there on Taylor Street. And he said come with him and cooperate and everything will be okay. I just stared at him. He repeated himself. I shifted my weight like I was going to go with him ... and then I turned this way and ran as fast as I could, yelling at the top of my lungs 'Rape! Murder!' Anything to get attention."

She called police. They responded quickly, but that has been it, Jeanne says. No mention of the crime ever making its way to Shirlington Village just around the corner.

"A detective did call me (Wednesday) evening and he seemed pretty concerned about it," says Hospod.

We noticed a security camera perched above the intersection where Hospod was nearly abducted. Perhaps it caught the crime in progress, but we don't know.

Our calls and email to Arlington police Wednesday were not returned.
