DeKalb County sheriff running for Congress

Posted: Updated:

DeKalb County Sheriff Tom Brown is running for Congress. The longtime metro Atlanta official kicked off his campaign against Rep. Hank Johnson with a series of events on Wednesday.

Brown is running in the 2014 Democratic primary in Georgia's 4th District. The heavily-Democratic district covers much of DeKalb County, as well as parts of Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale counties.

Brown has been sheriff of DeKalb County since 2001. Before that, he spent decades as a DeKalb County public safety officials.

"What people are looking for is in the front of the line leadership," Brown said. "We need someone that's not only going to keep with the core Democratic values, but someone who is going to shape American agenda. Someone who is going to be speaking for the district and speaking for this nation and not just waiting for legislation to be placed in front of them and then sign that legislation."

Johnson first won the seat in 2006. He issued a statement on Wednesday saying in part, "I will respect any challenge, but it's too early for primary politics and I'm focused on getting things done, not running for re-election."

The incumbent has remained popular in the 4th District, but questions have been raised about his apparent attempts at humor, including remarks in a congressional hearing about the possibility of the island of Guam tipping over because of the presence of more U.S. troops.

"People can judge for themselves how they feel about how he speaks," Brown said. "That is not for me to do. I'm about giving good leadership for this district and shaping America's agenda."

The winner of the primary next May is likely to be heavily favored to win the seat after the General Election.
