Police Look Into Hate Crime Burglary, Vandalism

Posted: Updated:
Alhambra, CA -

Police in Alhambra are investigating an apparent robbery as a hate crime, after a homeowner returned to his house Monday afternoon to discover the walls scrawled with racist comments and swastikas.

The homeowner, an African-American man, didn't want to comment to Fox 11 News, but one resident of the racially-mixed neighborhood told us that "they trashed the place."  The neighbor said bleach was poured all over the house, furniture ripped, computers broken, so much stuff, they are still trying to figure out. According to police, four handguns were taken during the break-in. No one was inside at the time, which was about 3:30p. Neighbors did not see anyone. Those same neighbors say the family that lives here are wonderful and the thieves and vandals should be caught.

Anyone with information is asked to call Alhambra detectives at 626-570-5151.

(FOX 11 / CNS) Police today are investigating as a hate crime the burglary and severe vandalism of home in Alhambra that was spray-painted with graffiti and racial insults.

Television sets were smashed, cabinets were broken, food was thrown about and graffiti was spray-painted in every room of the house, said Alhambra police Sgt. Jerry Johnson.

The break-in of the single-family home in the 2000 block of Midwickhill Drive was "absolutely" being investigated as a hate crime, Johnson said. A resident of the home reported the burglary at about 3 p.m. Monday, he said.

The graffiti included "a lot of very vulgar and profane things," Johnson said. Bleach was also poured inside the house, according to one news report.

The case was being investigated by Alhambra police detectives and crime scene investigators from the Los Angeles County Crime Lab, Johnson said.

Anyone with information about the crime was urged to contact Alhambra police at (626) 570-5168.

From Hal Eisner:

It was day 2 of an investigation into what police are calling a hate crime. But, while detectives and others had their eyes out for fingerprints and anything evidentiary, neighbors were stunned. More than one said to me "how could this happen in 2013?" Police say vandals struck between 1pm and 3pm Monday afternoon. They smashed TVs, destroyed cabinets, threw food and bleach everywhere and wrote vulgar racial epithets across the walls of the rooms of the house.

Elizabeth Krakovic, who lives across the street, was angry. "They deserve what she gets" she said. "They have no respect for their own homes if they would do that to someone else's." She described the family as very nice and, like another neighbor Jorge Ramos, imagined the horror the family must've felt when they got home to see the wreckage of what was their home.

The investigation is continuing.
